Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, S.J. (1 May 1881 – 10 April 1955) was a French Jesuit priest, paleontologist, philosopher, mystic, and teacher. Teilhard was born on 1 May 1881 at the Château of Sarcenat in Orcines, about 2.5 miles northwest of Clermont-Ferrand, Auvergne, in the French Third Republic. He was the fourth of eleven children. His father, Emmanuel Teilhard de Chardin (1844–1932), was a librarian, and his mother, Berthe-Adèle de Dompierre d’Hornoys of Picardy, was a great-grandniece of Voltaire. The double surname came from his father, whose Teilhard ancestors were a family of magistrates from Auvergne, originally from Murat, Cantal, and ennobled under Louis XVIII. His father, a graduate of the École Nationale des Chartes, worked as a regional librarian and was a dedicated naturalist who collected rocks, insects, and plants, encouraging nature study in the family. Teilhard’s spiritual side was nurtured by his mother. At age twelve, he entered the Jesuit college of Mongré in Villefranche-sur-Saône, earning a Baccalauréat in philosophy and mathematics. In 1899, he joined the Jesuit novitiate in Aix-en-Provence. In October 1900, he began junior studies at the Collégiale Saint-Michel de Laval, and on 25 March 1901, he took his first vows.
