Padre Pio (born Francesco Forgione; 25 May 1887 – 23 September 1968) was an Italian Capuchin friar, priest, stigmatist, and mystic. He is venerated as a saint in the Catholic Church, known for numerous instances of supernatural phenomena, most notably the stigmata—wounds resembling those of Jesus Christ at his crucifixion—on his hands, feet, and side. His reputation for sanctity grew despite Vatican investigations that temporarily sanctioned his ministry.

Francesco Forgione was born to peasant farmers in Pietrelcina, Italy, and joined the Capuchin Order at age 15, taking the name Fra Pio. He was ordained a priest in 1910 and spent most of his religious life at the monastery of San Giovanni Rotondo. During his priesthood, he was known for thousands of conversions and for his spiritual practices, including rosary meditations and the advice 'Pray, hope, and don't worry.'
Padre Pio experienced the stigmata and other mystical phenomena, which led to several Vatican investigations. Despite temporary sanctions on his ministry, his reputation for sanctity increased. He also founded the Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza, a hospital near the monastery. He died on 23 September 1968.
